This book presents a number of articles representing various disciplines of human sciences and proposes various answers to the question: "How to conceptualize the notion of identity?" Such a range of different approaches highlights complexity of the problem on one hand. On the other hand, the notion of identity is treated here as "tertium comparationis" for interdisciplinary discourse. There is a very broad literature on this subject available in contemporary social sciences, where interest in the notion of identity seems to be central. There is, however, a different background for European and American approaches applied to this problem. While an American interest in the notion of identity has a relatively long history (compared to the history of the country), in Europe it appeared only recently. Visibly different understandings of identity and diversified approaches to it are linked with different history and cultural backgrounds in both regions.
