Opis książki:
The aims of the study were to: (1) provide a description of morphological entities, their distribution and a set of diagnostic characters within the so-called Sphagnum subsecundum complex (Sphagnaceae) originated mainly from Europe and North America using classical taxonomic tools; (2) test of usefulness of morphological characteristics in the proper identification of distinguished morphological entities by applying quantitative analysis; (3) detect the influence of environmental conditions and natural hybridization upon the morphology of some analyzed taxa. A reassessment of herbarium materials reveals that: (1) morphospecies in the complex, consi-dered as widespread, as well as eight new informally described morphs, demonstrated a complex pattern of geographical differentiation, i.e. areas of endemism; (2) geographically separated popula-tions have similar morphological characteristics and similar morphologies occur within the uni- and bistratose species. A mechanism called adaptive phenotypic accommodation has been proposed to explain the origin and yariability of morphologica! traits in the complex. There is an urgent need for morę research studies to enhance the current state of knowledge of Spliagmtm before finał classification of the Sphagnum subsecundum complex will be made. Key words: Sphagnaceae; Sphagnum subsecundum complex; morphological variability; adaptive phenotypic accommodation; distribution
