The booklet presents the history of an extraordinary folk custom – the lajkonik festival. Apart from the fascinating story about the character of the lajkonik as such and the origin and evolution of this folk tradition, readers will find a rich pictorial content here – the text is illustrated with numerous reproductions of iconographic representations from the collection of the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków (e.g. paintings by Michał Stachowicz and Hipolit Lipiński, or prints by Andrzej Zajkowski and Witold Chomicz), as well as archival photographs of the lajkonik’s frolicking from the interwar period and contemporary photos documenting this annual festival.
