Rozprawa poświęcona jest badaniom selektywności ciekłych membran zarówno w aspekcie praktycznym, jak również podstawowym, zmierzającym do wyjaśnienia mechanizmu tworzenia na nich skoku potencjału elektrycznego. Podjęcie kompleksowych badań nad selektywnością ciekłych membran, dogłębna krytyczna analiza technik jej określania, w tym głównie metod zalecanych przez IUPAC, stanowią oryginalne osiągnięcia autora. Równie istotne jest opracowanie metodyki pomiaru selektywności i traktowanie selektywności jako funkcji aktywności jonów w badanym roztworze. Osiągnięcia autora mogą być wykorzystane również w badaniach membran jonoselektywnych innego typu, np. stałych i polimerowych.
Selectivity of ion-selective electrodes with liquid membranes
The potentiometric sensors - Ion-selective electrodes have been developing dynamically for over 30 years. In spite of such long history and an enormous amount of papers about them, many fundamental problems, very `important from theoretical as well as practical point of view, remain unsolved. Among the most important of them are the mechanism of potential generation and selectivity mechanism closely related to it. The book talks about problems related to definition and methodology of selectivity of ion-selective electrodes. A methodological analysis of the IUPAC-recommended method of selectivity coefficient determination has been conducted, its shortcomings have been shown and a new method has been proposed, which treats selectivity as a function dependent on the activity of interfering ions. Selectivity characteristic of 15 different kinds of ion-selective, liquid-membrane electrodes has been investigated, and the results of the investigation allowed to explain the commonly observed variation of selectivity coefficient. A model of electrode selectivity phenomenon has been proposed, in which the most important factors are the ion adsorption processes in phase boundary area between the electrode membrane and aqueous solution. The new mathematical model of ion-selective electrodes has been introduced - the modified Nikolski-Eizenman equation, enhanced with a formula describing potential-generating ions adsorption processes in phase boundary area.
