Celem książki jest scharakteryzowanie wyglądu pokrywy śnieżnej w zależności od kierunków przepływu powietrza w zachodniej części Niżu Polskiego. Aby scharakteryzować dystrybucję pokrywy śnieżnej na danym terenie, wyliczono i przedstawiono za pomocą izolinii cechy występowania pokrywy śnieżnej, takie jak: minimalna, maksymalna i średnia liczba dni w roku z pokrywą śnieżną oraz daty występowania i zaniku śniegu.
Snow cover and the directions of air-flows in the North--Western Poland
The aim of this study was to characterize the appearance of snow cover in connec-tion with the directions of air-flows in the western part of Niż Polski (the Polish Plains). In order to characterise the distribution of snow cover in the studied area, values of major characteristics of snow cover occurrence (including the minimum, maximum and average annual number of days with snow cover and the maximum depth of snow cover: dates of its occurrence and disappearance) were calculated and presented by means of isolines. Upon consideration of the geographical distribution of snow cover, a division of North-Western Poland into four regions was proposed. In the second stage of the research relationships between the daily changes in the snow cover depth and air-flow directions were taken into consideration. It was proved that frequent and long-lasting occurrence of sequenced changes in the air-flows direc-tions from northern (or north-western at the beginning of winter) to south-eastern results in a high probability of snowy winter. On the other hand, air-flows from the south-west and west do not contribute to the increase in snow cover depth or its sustainment.
