This paper is and attempt at analysing the influence of a big river and its valley on the distribution of plant species on a supra-regional level. The scale of species diversity in a big river valley and the factors that determine it have also been analysed. A detailed analysis has been done for the southern part of the Middle Vistula from the mouth of the San to the mouth of the Wieprz Rivers (Lublin Region Vistula).
