Surface sediments of Sunda and Vietnam shelves (South China Sea, SE Asia) were studied for their variation in sedimentological properties, mineralogical and geochemical composition. The study area is divided into three parts on the basis of discriminated mineralogical and geochemical provinces. They are: northern and central Vietnam shelves covered mainly by muds, southern Vietnam shelf and northern Sunda shelf dominated by siliciclastic sediments (lithoclastic sands), and central Sunda shelf blanked with neritic sediments (organic-Iithoclastic sands and silts). Three genetic types of sediments are distinguished: modern sediments, modern sediments with admixture of older deposits and relict deposits. Modern sediments on central Vietnam shelf are delivered from Truong Son Mountains. They are, in part, further transported across shelf and, later along shelf and continental slope, in southward direction. The shelf between Natuna Islands and southem Vietnam is mainly covered by relict deposits (sands). Sediments from central Sunda shelf reveal transitional features.
