On the Multitude of the Lines of Development in the Historical Process. An Attempt at Interpretation of Evolution of Mexican Society
The purpose of this work is such extension of non-Marxian historical materialism that it could conceptualize development of Mexican society. Until now, this theory has been limited to the interpretation of history of societies belonging to European civilization, and development of non-European societies has not been broadly discussed within its frame. Such an undertaking requires transformation of this theory into a scientific research program, which allows for elaboration the typology of developmental lines. One of these lines of development assumes accumulation of economic and political power in the hand of one social class.
This accumulation was a characteristic feature of the history of Mexican society. The class of owners-rulers dominated in the Aztec society, and this fact determined the nature of Aztec hegemony imposed all over Mezoamerica. This social structure outlived the conquest because the encomenderos, originating from the first generation of conquistadors, was the core of a new class of owners-rulers which possessing military power, assured their economic rule over the Indian peasantry in the Mexico Valley. Also, in the independent Mexico, the class of owners (hacendados), who at the time of political weakness of central authorities gained control of coercive means, transformed in the double class of owners-rulers what was one of the main sources of political instability in Mexico between 1821-54.
