This book is a collection of studies devoted to Polish Reformation writings of the 16th century. The first part De republica et rege. Marzenia i nadzieje [De re publica et rege. Dreams and hopes] concerns views of the dissenters on royal power on the basis of tine 16th century songs and prayers for the king. In Part Two (In the polemic squabble), selected aspects of the polemic character of Reformation literature arc discussed: the theatrical character of the holy mass aimed against the religious cult of the Catholic Church, mystification as a tool of disputes on religious denominations and the widespread functioning of the Scriptures in the 16th century as a peculiarly polemic text. Part Three (From "the beginning" to "the end ") is focused on the Protestant religious ideology and on anthropological conceptions and concerns of the Reformation idea of the return to the sources of faith and the vision of a quick end of "the indecent kingdom" and the sinful world. The work is concluded with a study, which is set around Wespazjan Kochowski s poem, Bando na aryjany [A proclamation on Arians] and devoted to the change in the attitude to dissenters as preserved in literature in the period between the Warsaw and Bar Confederation (1573-1768).
