The book titled Na starość. Szkice o literaturze przełomu tysiqcleci [For OId Age. Essays on the Literature of the Turn of the Millennia] is the result of studies on the functioning of the theme of old age in Polish literature starting from the middle of the ninth decade of the 20th century when texts on this subject appeared in a distinctly greater number than in the previous decades and appear until now. Considerations concerning cultural contexts of the subject are connected with an attempt at recognition of the roots of the modern and postmodern variants of textual existence of the perennial opposition old age/youth. Interpretations of the works of the 1980s, when the subject began to be a recognisable literary tendency and which is the point of departure of the thematological searches, a point of arrival are here considerations on the subject of specificity oftransformations of its realisation after the breakthrough of 1989. In the book is also discussed the problem of unlikeness of contemporary strategies of creating visions of getting old ofthe individuals and societies, which found its reflection in the most recent Polish literature and the problem, which has been conditioned by the civilization crisis, of perceiving man and the world in the 21th century culture, which has been particularly marked by the decline, break of the hierarchy ofvalues and erosion oflanguages incapable of individual and common experiences in the text
