The subject of this book is the study of figural ornamentation found on clay vessels, which were made locally in the Barbaricum area, and are dated to pre-Roman and Roman periods. The first part of this book contains catalogue descriptions. Further on the structural and typological analysis of the ornaments, their chronology and diffusion are discussed.
The figural motifs which are matter of this book show a remarkable variety in images and techniques employed, since they occur in broad dimnological frames. Almost all of them come from the cul- tural background of Germanic societies of mentioned periods. In the last part of the book the author considers a question of usefulness same archaeological sources in research on symbolic system of prehistoric societies. Finally considered figural motifs are interpreted in the background of Indo-European and Germanic system of beliefs.
