Opis książki:

The articles coilected in this vo!ume approach the complex issues of borders, borderlands and borderland identities from multiple vantage points, by deploying vanous methodo-ogies and criticai perspectives, although they do not purport to offer a comprenensive overview of scholarship on the topie. Rather, the texts expiore points of convergence between emerging academic reflection, events of globai h i story, and personal experience. The contnbutors, who come from a rangę of countries, disciplines, and institutions inter-rogate various senses of the notion of borderlands, ranging from those defined in political, social and histoncal categones through religious and anthropologica! liminal spaces to aesthetical, artistic and literary hybrids, While some essays discuss political and artistic appropnations of such constructs as border walis other texts focus on crossing the borders of national, class and gender identity. The hybrid fantasy of reconstructed historical legacy is analyzed aiongside with the deconstruction of the purported purity of categones that descnbe the modern world, and the contamination of religious traditions, The view of borderlands which arises from this collection of essays is that of dynamie sites where otherness is produced, persecuted, and ceiebrated. Siń

ce the contributors and editors of the volume believe that communication is crucia! to erasing borders, the project has been intended as an invitation to a diaiogue about borders and across borders. By partiapating in this dialogue we transcend the borders of our understanding of the worid, therefore of our understanding of ourselves.
