Active learning in primary education
This publication present a constructivist model of teaching and results of researches. This researches refer to primary teachers strategies of education and degree of development of cognitive skills according to the strategy of teaching. Constructivism, as a theory of learning is the context of interpreting results of the investigations. Fundamentally, constructivism asserts that we learn through a continual process of constructing, interpreting and modifying our own representations of reality based on our experiences with reality. It means, that pupils learn during their own activities. Meanwhile, as the results of investigations show, the most of Polish primary teachers use a traditional strategy of education. They do not create environments for active learning. Only 7,5 per cent of investigated teachers use an active strategy of teaching. They create rich environments for active learning. Children experienced an active strategy of teaching have more developed cognitive skills, then the ones experienced a traditional strategy of education. They are better in following cognitive skills: ability to classify, ability to problems identify, ability to use personal knowledge in new context, ability to assess truth and usefulness of information, ability to project of problem solving. Results of the investigation of Polish primary teachers and pupils can use to project of models of teaching children and teachers. They show that, common understandings, personal knowledge and cognitive skills are developed through own activities. Pupils own representations of reality based on they experiences with reality. Beside, investigative data are indicators of teaching strategy changes based on the reform of education foundations in Poland.
