Adsorption and adsorbents. Theory and applications
In this work the fundamental definitions related to the phenomenon of adsorption and characterization of the adsorbent - adsorbate interactions are presented and contemporary theories and models of adsorption at the solid-gas and solid-liquid interface are discussed. Types of adsorption isotherms and types of hysteresis of adsorption and desorption processes and shapes of the pores corresponding to hysteresis loops are described. Emphasis has been put on the methods used for the determination of the texture of adsorbents. Procedures for the determination of parameters, based on a commonly available method of gas chromatography is given. Methods of obtaining different adsorbents such as silica gel, alumina, silicates, amorphous aluminino silicates, synthetic zeolites, active coat and ion-exchange resins are discussed, characterization of their surface and of the active centres is given as well as examples of application of these adsorbents for removal of heavy metal ions and environmentally harmful organic compounds are described. Mechanisms of adsorption processes are discussed and mention is made of industrial processes of adsorption and regeneration of adsorbents.
